086 - Accent Ascendant
Thursday, September 13th, 2007With alcohol comes accented English.
Rich and I discovered that Dallas's Scottish accent is tied to his confidence level; the more confident he is, the more it shows. Of course, stripping inhibition from him through any means available produces the desired conditions. Dallas is a rabbit trapped by his own overactive though processes.
I like Dallas a lot as a character; he's solid, three-dimensional (at least, in my head). There's even times I yell at him for not getting something or for being set in his ways. I want to just write his lines differently, magically give him a level of confidence that makes him more like Mike, but it just doesn't happen like that. He says what he wants to say. I respect that in a character.
So I fume and I rant and I smile, and I apparently get sentimental. I guess that, with the major storyline of the year being over, my part is basically done. I won't be writing Dallas for a while, and I already kind of miss that.

Accents are like that. When I’m in distress or nervous, my accent thickens the consistency of blackstrap molasses in a January freeze. It also thickened while I was working as a waitress (unconciously), when talking to my kin (great-aunts, etc), and when talking about genealogy. The funny thing is, I grew up being asked where I was from (ie in my own hometown), so I don’t normally have much of an accent.

Dallas is my favourite character. Whether it’s the fact that he’s a rabbit, he’s Scottish or a Doctor Who geek, I find him the best character to me. I hope he’ll be around for years to come.
(And in case you’re wondering, I love rabbits, my favourite animal, I am Scottish- Wick, way up in Caithness in the highlands, and a real geek for the new Doctor Who and working my way towards watching the classic series.)
