071 - Mort The Scourge
Monday, July 23rd, 2007IT guys have such a way with words.
My girlfriend started reading Book 7 last night. I assume I don't need to name the series. Having been spoiled due some seriously unethical tricks on a forum I frequent, I have to keep my distance from her during this (hopefully short) time of immersion for her. I'm writing this rant, therefore, in the office while she reads in the living room. Not a massive change from how these rants normally occur, but hey, if I can make it sound like a major sacrifice, I will.
I'm not versed in Potter, having only watched the movies. The books remain unread. I have no overriding investment, emotional or financial, in these characters. Even so, I worry, mostly that I'll reveal something to my girlfriend, smile or frown at the wrong time when she asks me a question. And of course, when I told her that I had been spoiled, her first question was, "Does Harry live?" I suppose that would be the instinctive reaction of any fan of the novels. There are burning questions only 750 pages can reveal fully, and my spoiled state is such a tempting shortcut. But, just like the dark side, it's only easier and more seductive because it is inherently evil.
So, she's probably 50 pages in now, and I'm hearing her reactions as she reads. It's wonderful, actually, to listen to; she laughs out loud, gasps, groans at the puns and foreshadowed events. That she's so thoroughly enjoying the book helps mitigate my bitterness.

PS: This week's voting bonus is a sketch montage of Becky taken from just before we began working on EN version 3 (the version of EN you see now). It includes the last sketch of Becky with her old shading scheme, and the first three with her new scheme.

If you spoil it for me… I will END you.
I just noticed that these early versions still have her with the "white belly" fur pattern… I later changes this to be more correct to actual skunk fur, and her body is now completely black other than her stripe. I miss the glasses.
Does anybody actually read these?
