070 - Uncle Allen
Thursday, July 19th, 2007Someone may be trying too hard.
So, my best friend wants to work in radio. Normally, this is something to talk wistfully about and regret on one's deathbed, but my best friend has a plan. He's getting his degree in communications, worked some play-by-play for the local Division III college basketball team, and with some help from his best friend (that would be me for those who haven't vomited already), hosted a sports podcast for two years.
Now, the local sports radio station has an opening. My best friend has applied, and last night, I helped him assemble his reel. Since the position is as co-host, a lot of the material we chose involved our interaction. Nostalgia is a funny thing, and it gives you strange ideas, like Getting The Band Back Together and Bombing The Country Your Dad Bombed. Some good, some not so much, to be sure.
The decision to start up the podcast should he not get the job as co-host was the easiest ever to make. Getting The Band Back Together always is. Now I'm torn. I genuinely want him to succeed, to be the radio personality he wants to be, but I also want to have fun making the podcast like we used to do.
There's not much I can do, really. Eventually, something will happen to simplify things. Either way, I get to be happy.
The trick, I guess, is not to try too hard.
