035 - Give It Up!
Monday, February 26th, 2007So I'm actually really pleased with this week's strips. They're double sized, for DOUBLE the DRAMA. I think I did a good job with the framing of the panels during the argument. I sometimes feel a little sorry for Leona. She was originally a major character in the second revision of our story (this is the 3rd). In this version, she was a throwaway character, she existed only to keep Becky from asking Mike out right off the bat. She's not a bad person, we just need her to go away. Sorry if there are any die-hard Leona fans out there.

When Rich showed me this double strip, I was simply in awe. He'd been saying "I'm going to try to be a little more cinematic. Let me know if I did okay." Understated, as usual. I think he did a great job with this, so much so that I almost feel embarrassed about my script. Abandoned, not finished, as the saying goes.
Those of you who are Leona fans will be in a for a nice surprise next week. In order to facilitate a small vacation for my overworked artist, I wrote a four-part short story featuring Leona. It'll run in place of the comic on Mondays and Thursdays for two weeks. I'm pretty happy with it; it beats a Shirt Guy Matt strip any day.

It’s amazing how things can change between revisions of a story. Characters drop or are brought to prominence and then tossed ultimately in favor of strengthening the story.
If you think about it, the analogy to coaching a team is pretty strong here.
And, Matt, I thank God that you’re not gonna do a Shirt Guy Matt strip. It sent a shiver down my spine when I thought of something malignent like those Dom comics on M.T. appearing here.
Keep up the great series you two!
