005 - Backyard
Monday, November 13th, 2006Old sketchbooks are the devil. I’ve been sorting through my old boxes in the garage; consolidating half-empty boxes and tossing old electronics that cost a fortune 10 years ago and are worthless today. One of the boxes was of old sketchbooks dating back to the turn of the century. Some of this stuff is SO BAD, I just want to throw it out. But at the same time, there are a few gems in there worth keeping. It’s quite the dillema. When I was an undergrad, I was quite a prolific sketcher and I never seemd to be short of ideas to draw. That’s changed lately. Outside of the comic, I can’t seem to force myself to draw. When I do draw, I tend to tear out and toss anything that isn’t working out. (So nothing ever survives.)
So the last two strips were a little annoying because they required me to actually draw backgrounds and scenery… and I’m not very good at that. This strip is interesting in that I drew the characters and the scenery separately, and spliced them in together. Anyway, I hope that you can tell that that’s supposed to be a veritable panda smorgasboard in the backyard.

I’m taking second rant today because Rich’s was more interesting. I particularly liked this sequence of strips (from #003 to #005) because of Li’s ability to distill everything down to a perfect phrase. Designing it as one panel instead of three also felt good; it’s no big feat of comic writing prowess, by any stretch of the imagination, but it mixes things up just a little.
And nobody, not even my own mother, would want to see the sketches I made during my “I think I can draw!” phase.
