003 - All The Talking
Monday, November 6th, 2006One of the advantages of working on a gag-a-day strip is that plots can come in modular units. One day plots, five day plots, a slow, background continuity that a running gag can give you. This first arc runs for nine strips (given the two strips per week format, it felt good to dedicate a month to introducing all the characters and setting up the situation), and this marks the first big plot point: Becky’s reaction to Mike says it all.

So the softball comic died for a couple reasons, not the least of which was that it required a large cast of characters to comprise both the main team, as well as a smattering of opponents. Another problem that I had was that I felt really out of touch with the high school culture, being that I graduated from high school almost a decade ago. So the second iteration of the comic moved our characters to college. It was to be a short story about Becky and Mike making a project in film school. While Matthew and I were collaborating on this project, I was sent to India to work, and time zones worked against us. The project died by the time I returned, and we went back to the drawing board. It seems like the third time is the charm… …we hope…
